When talking to production companies try to find out what makes them tick. Ask them why they do what they do. Are they passionate about what they do? Or, are they just interested in the bottom line? Will they be helpful and professional to deal with? Can you meet them in person and view their work?
If they're not immediately and easily accessible, are there other ways you can view their work? Via the web for instance, or do tapes still have to be sent through the post?
How involved do you want to be in the process? Let them know up-front as they can explain everything from the start, which allows you to understand the processes as you move through a production.
